15 ALICIA
When I tell Elias that I talked to Max, he doesn't seem exceptionally excited about it. He tells me that he'll call to check on him, but I'm pretty sure it's a lie. Max always said he barely spoke to Elias. None of them did.
I can't believe he helped him. Reiniger isn't in his right mind. He would never want to be on the run. To be a wolf. Max should know better. Or at least, I thought so until my phone rings one morning, and I pick up the call from the strange number.
“Alicia,” he says when I pick up, and I almost choke. I shut the bedroom door and lock Javier out to talk to him. “How are you?”
“How am I? Fuck you,” I hiss. “What are you thinking? Where are you?”
“I am calling to tell you to quit.”
“Quit? Quit what?”
“If you resign, they will give you money for a plane ticket to New York. You should go home.”
“Go home. After all this, you want me to go home? You know he's in Germany.”
“I know. You need to forget about him. This is going to go badly, Alicia. There are not going to be any more Wolfjäger. You will be killed, and I would rather you are not. Go home to your family, and forget I ever came to your door.”
I laugh at him, but I'm furious. “Forget? Are you fucking kidding me? I'm not quitting now. Not when he's here, not when Adam Weiss is shit stirring, and especially not when you've lost your damn mind. You need to come in. I don't want you to die, either, but you know it's right. You can't go on like this.” I hesitate. “If you don't want to go to Bärenheim, at least meet me somewhere. I'll...I'll do it, if you want me to.”
“No. This is the way it must be. Go home, Alicia. I hope I do not see you again.” Then he hangs up. I try to call the number back, but get no answer. When I call Max's phone, it's disconnected. So where the hell is Max now?
I can't quit. There's too much at stake, and I can help. How could I just go home to the States, knowing what's happening here?
I tell Elias what Reiniger said. I expect him to be angry, or want to go after him, or something. It's only been a day since we talked to Karl Weiss, but I expected more. Frau Strauss hasn't told us what to do, and now Elias doesn't seem interested in following up with his brother. Instead, he asks me out to lunch.
We go to a small restaurant in the city, and he instructs me to keep my sleeves pulled down to hide my tattoo. They'll be looking for anyone not normally stationed here, he says.
“I'm sure you're distraught about my brother,” he continues as he folds his napkin neatly in his lap, “but he will be brought in. Another Krallen is probably already on his case.
